English for Law Courses Launched

Officials from the Office of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor (OSPP) will receive specialised English for Law training over the next five years. The English for Law Programme comes under the joint work plan between ILSTA and OSPP. Director of Personnel Department of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor Mr. Somboun Latsabouasy said, “This training programme is much needed and timely. Our officials require English language skills more and more these days, particularly as we integrate into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the global economy under the WTO. English has not only become the global language, but is also the official language of ASEAN. Therefore, as well as requiring a good knowledge of both domestic and international law, our prosecutors must have the ability to communicate in English.“

President of ILSTA, Mr Richard Philippart said, “From our view, we understand that English for law training is a long-term investment. Under our 5‐year agreement with OSPP, we are in a position to deliver this specialised training. The materials have been developed over a number of years and are benchmarked to international standards. The course covers a wide range of legal topics including criminal procedure, the Lao court system, human trafficking, and the rule of law.” Placement testing of 134 prosecutors took place over three days in May, with the first 11-week course starting on June 13th. “We hope to expand this programme in the future to include officials from other institutions in the legal sector. With this in mind, we will be looking for other donors to join ILSTA in supporting this English for Law Programme.
