Laundering the Proceeds of Corruption

Continuing the theme of corruption, Keith Farquharson, a Program Officer with ILSTA, delivered a presentation on “Laundering the Proceeds of Corruption” at the Faculty of Law and Political Science on 5 December.

Using actual cases, he illustrated a number of ways in which corrupt officials attempt to launder the proceed of their corrupt acts.

In the discussion which followed, members of the audience raised a number of important issues including the difficulties in detecting and preventing corruption, recovering stolen assets which have been laundered in foreign jurisdictions, and the use of anonymous accounts and tax havens.
