This week in Laos we celebrate the Constitution!

The Constitution of Lao PDR was adopted on August 15th, 1991, and amended in 2015.

What is the Constitution?

The Constitution is the basic law of the nation – it defines the various institutions of government; prescribes their composition, powers, and functions; and regulates relations between them.

The Lao Constitution establishes the rights and duties of the Lao people.

Did you know?

• it guarantees citizens equality before the law (Article 35)

• it provides for equality regardless of gender (Article 37)

• it enshrines the right to academic freedom and the right to choose an occupation (Articles 38 & 39)
